MRIs - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Definition: An MRI scanner creates magnetic fields that molecules in the body respond to. The MRI scanner detects these responses and creates a visual image that a radiologist examines. Because molecules in lesions (areas of inflammation) respond to MRIs differently than healthy areas, MRIs are useful in diagnosing and monitoring MS.
