Some H1N1 Fun Reading for My MS Friends

Tuesday October 13, 2009

As many of you know, I am guest blogging on About.com's Infectious Disease site (I am an infectious disease epidemiologist by training). I thought that you, my MS friends, might be interested in some of the stuff I am uncovering, so I have brought this list to you. It is not really MS-specific, although many of the topics apply to us all. Also, I would like to think that I am arming people with MS out there to be the smartest, most current guests at any cocktail party they might attend... That said, here are the most recent posts (in reverse chronological order):

Hi Julie, this is very off topic, but have you heard of CCSVI in Multiple Sclerosis (google it if not)? Might be time to start thinking and posting about it….

Just thought I’d point out that there’s some really exciting stuff happening right now. I was surprised to not hear about this on your blog, although it’s been a hot topic for some time now.

Just to describe it briefly, a 100% correlation has been found between diagnosis of MS and presence of obstructions in the major veins running away from the CNS. ALL patients with MS have it, NO controls have it. In other words, it is a more reliable diagnosis tool than MRI and/or spinal tab. And it offers a new way to treat MS, by clearing the obstructions.

I am an MS Newbie, but had a lot of nasty neuro symptoms this past summer – which I attribute to core temp increases. So what happens if I get the flu and run a fever. Do all these nasty nerve damage problems appear?

Ditto to request for more info re: CCSVI and MS! There is a great Facebook page devoted to it.

Have MS; Had flu shot a few yrs ago; within an hour of having shot, was burning up with 104+ fever; sick for days. Understand and was told flu shot can’t cause the flu, however this wasn’t my experience. As they believe MS to be viral, that means MSers are a “time-bomb” waiting to happen. Those who give flu shots, say that if you have a virus pending, it can bring it out ~ You Think! Reluctant to have another shot, flu or H1N1…
