When I am not having a multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse or experiencing MS symptoms that are worse than usual, I would say that I am pretty healthy. When I am experiencing more disability than usual from my MS, I would say that I am not healthy. Sound familiar?

This program was designed to help people with MS see the “bigger picture” when it comes to health. Humans are complex creatures, and there is far more to overall health than physical functioning. Granted, when we don’t feel good physically, it is hard to feel “healthy.” However, by putting effort into looking at other aspects of health, including social health, spiritual health, and mental health, it is easier to not only put physical ailments into perspective, but also to make changes to habits that could help us feel better in general.

I am suggesting that you try this “program” for a week as a little experiment. See how you feel at the end of the week. If you like the results, continue on and do more. If you don’t feel any benefits, stop. This is one of four parts of the Redefine Health Program for People with Multiple Sclerosis.

Introduction: Most people do not think about their health until something is physically wrong – health is something they either have or do not have. This understanding of health doesn’t work for all, or even most, circumstances. People who have strong physical health may suffer from depression. People with debilitating illnesses may have incredibly rich spiritual lives. Illnesses may change priorities and strengthen relationships. True health encompasses our bodies, our emotions, our minds, our relationships, our homes, our behaviors and our spiritual selves. When you think about your health (and your MS), check in with all of these aspects of health. This week, you’ll spend time working with and expanding your definition of health.

How It Works: Instead of focusing your thoughts on your MS, you’ll being putting energy toward finding ways to increase health despite of (or even because of) your MS. This shift can be incredible. You’ll no longer be trapped by your illness’s progression and symptoms. You will have more control over your health and more options for ways to become healthier.

Get Motivated: Would you like to become healthier every day? All you have to do is shift your understanding of “health” to include all aspects of health, not just the physical side. You’ll then be able to see where progress can be made. Each day you can make gains, even if your symptoms are worsening. We are interested in total health – not just your symptom severity or disability.
