Definition: These are steroid hormones that contain cortisone and have anti-inflammatory properties. In multiple sclerosis (MS), corticosteroids such as Solu-Medrol® (Methylprednisolone) are used to shorten the length of relapses and can lessen MS symptoms. These corticosteroids are given in high doses intravenously for a period of three to seven days. Prolonged courses of low-dose corticosteroids are usually not recommended for people with MS, as this approach has very little effect on disease course and long-term corticosteroid use can have serious side effects.
