Peripheral Nervous System

Definition: Refers to all nerves other than those of the central nervous system (CNS). These nerves carry signals to (and from) the CNS to all the muscles and organs of the body.

The two kinds of nerves that make up the peripheral nervous system are: motor (or efferent) nerves, which make the body parts move in response to signals from the brain; and sensory (or afferent) nerves, which carry information to the brain.
