Definition: An injection given directly into a muscle, which is usually at least one inch deep.

Avonex is a disease-modifying therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS) that is given by intramuscular injection. Usually this is done by the patient or a family member at home, but can be done in the doctor’s office until the patient feels confident enough to self-inject.
