Review of Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis

Tuesday September 18, 2007
Jeffrey Gingold does a fantastic job of describing the experience of MS-related cognitive dysfunction, as well as his reactions to this incredibly frustrating symptom of multiple sclerosis in his book, Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis. He illustrates, through his own story, the spectrum of cognitive issues -- many of which go overlooked by neurologists, family members and even patients themselves.

We can all relate to different parts of Gingold's story, as we all have our own "MS memoirs" playing themselves out: the strange symptoms, the diagnosis, the treatment decisions, the interactions with loved ones (and trying to make decisions when to reveal and when to cover up our latest symptoms). It's a story of a regular guy, trying to figure it all out.

Even if you don't have cognitive dysfunction (or are not sure), this book has practical tips and insight into other parts of MS, as Gingold does things like fire his doctor and bring out a cane for the first time without alarming his young daughters. He is a fighter -- for himself and his family -- but also for the rest of us, as he tells us not to give up and not to give in.
