Stems Cells to Treat Multiple Sclerosis: ECTRIMS 2011

You know, I have put off writing about stem cells and multiple sclerosis (MS) for a long time. The reason is simple, albeit kind of lame: it is a complicated topic, which I found a little overwhelming.

However, here at the ECTRIMS 2011 conference, I had the chance to sit in on a "teaching course" on stem cells, entitled "Stem cell therapy - translating experimental data into MS therapy." I won't say that the information presented was extremely easy to understand, but it was so fascinating that I did the mental work necessary to pull it into an article about the use of hematopoeitic stem cells to treat MS.

This is a hugely exciting area of research, and with my new-found insight into stem cells, I intend to write some in-depth articles on the topic. Stay tuned.

Until that time, read my full blog from ECTRIMS 2011 here (posted on the National MS Society website): Advances as Using Stem Cells as a Treatment for MS

Good Afternoon,

Like all of you with MS I would like to think that in time there may be a solution/treatment that will work for everyone.

May I comment on just one example I know of, a lady I know that had the stem cell surgery about 4 years ago, MS struck her when she was married with a young family. she had attack after attack and basically no remission at all. She decided to have the surgery but it really didn’t help her, it may well have been that it was too late because she was in a pretty poor state before the operation. She is a very brave lady and I was hoping it would help her. That though is just one sad case.
