Q. Can Gingko Biloba Help My MS Symptoms?

A. I guess it's theoretically possible that the herb Gingko biloba might help the cognitive dysfunction that many people with multiple sclerosis experience as one of their most troubling MS symptoms. Personally, I never rule anything out, as long as it's safe and some people say that it has helped them with similar problems.

However, the scientific evidence is not there to show that Gingko is really that helpful with these specific problems. Again, not wanting to be a downer, especially if you are one of the people who may find some help from this herb, I would recommend checking with your doctor about Gingko if you are curious. If he gives you the green light, try it for yourself and see what you think.

I have been taking curcumin (turmeric) for 5 years. There are many studies on its effect on cancer and Alzheimer.

There is one good study at Vanderbilt on its effect on MS. They gave rats EAE. The ones treated with curcumin did not become paralyzed. Those not treated became paralyzed.

Probably not studied much because bulk turmeric is incredibly cheap and capsules of concentrated curcumin is inexpensive.

I have tried Green Barley powder for a while concerning fatigue and I must admit it helped.

I have friends with MS that get flare up with natural products…
Like Julie suggested , a consultation with your doctor would be essential before you start any thing that is not prescribed. Sometimes it goes against your traditional meds. for example, Paxil and Primerose oil combine together ,I was told ,is not a good mix….at all.

I have taken Ginko for years. At one time I tried to stop taking it to see if I could tell a difference. I did notice things get worse while off so I started taking it again. I am also on Aricept and Namenda., they are both for Alzheimer’s.

My thought is try Ginko, if you notice a positive difference (and your doctor is ok with it) go for it. We have one life lets make it the best we can.

Julie, thanks again and wishing you the best.
