What Do People Know About Multiple Sclerosis?

By , About.com GuideMay 5, 2009

Follow me on:

The U.K. National Multiple Sclerosis Society conducted a survey of more than 2000 people to assess how much they know about multiple sclerosis. Here are some of the highlights:
  • 40% of the public could not name one symptom of multiple sclerosis.
  • People thought multiple sclerosis led to bad teeth, phlegm and other random symptoms.
  • 40% thought all people with multiple sclerosis would end up in a wheelchair.
I wonder if we would do any better in the U.S. (or, if you are not American, in your home country)? What do you think? Have any good examples?

Take a look at some less-than-informed comments that readers have submitted in answer to the question "What is the stupidest thing someone has said to you about MS?" Submit your own examples of stupidity, insensitivity or just plain meanness (letting it out helps the healing)...

I have MS and I think the stupidest comment I get is “Everyone gets tired sometimes.” I really hate that one.
