$300,000 for Exercise and Multiple Sclerosis Research

Friday December 5, 2008
Almost $300,000 has been awarded to an UK university to study the impact of exercise on multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms. The grant (from the MS Society), awarded to the Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Sport and Exercise, will explore the benefits of exercise on multiple sclerosis.

Exercise Can Help People with Multiple Sclerosis... But, Don't We Already Know This?
Yes and no. We know that exercise, in general, can help people with multiple sclerosis, but we don't know the details. Do certain types of exercise work better on certain symptoms? How much exercise is enough to see good results? Should exercise programs be part of routine multiple sclerosis treatment? If so, when and for which patients.

The research project will help to answer these questions with the goal of setting national policy for the U.K. on exercise as a treatment for multiple sclerosis. The study will measure quality of life before and after a 12-week exercise program.
