Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as tic doloureux, is perhaps the most painful symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). Experienced by 4% of people with MS, it is a sharp, severe pain in the lower part of the face, often brought on by chewing or touch.
Many people with MS are not aware that this type of pain can be a symptom of MS. Mistakenly assuming that this is dental pain results in people getting unnecessary dental procedures, such as root canals and procedures to correct their bites or reposition their jaws. It is important to mention any type of unusual sensation or pain to your neurologist.
