Is Betaseron Right for You?

Wednesday September 19, 2007
Having listened to your questions regarding treatment over the last several months, and thinking about my own experience when I was trying to decide which disease-modifying therapy to begin, I decided to put together a series of articles on each of the current MS treatments out there. My goal in these articles is not to convince you to start treatment or convince you that side effects or needles aren't so bad (sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't). I'm also not going to discuss pharmacological mechanisms, effects on different types of lesions, or politics around the treatments here -- those are separate future articles.

I wanted to pull together the facts on each drug, in terms of how they work into our lives -- in other words, answer the questions that we all have when faced with this choice (but may be embarrassed to bother our doctor with), such as: How big is the needle? Will it leave a mark? Will I feel better -- or worse -- taking this drug?

My first article is on Betaseron, one of the interferon-based therapies in the group often referred to as CRAB (Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex, Betaseron) drugs. Let me know if I left something out, and be on the lookout for similar articles about the other disease-modifying drugs for MS: AVONEX, Rebif, Copaxone, Novantrone and Tysabri.
